Mets Could Bring Chris Young Back
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, confirmed that Mets GM Sandy Alderson would be interested in bringing back right-handed pitcher Chris Young under the right circumstances and most likely only on a minor league deal.
Last month on a conference call with reporters, Alderson said he had recently met with Young in San Diego: “He’s the kind of guy we might re-sign under the right circumstances.”
Back on December 6, Chris Young’s agent spoke to Corey Brock of MLB.com and said that Young was recovering well from his torn shoulder capsule and should be ready for spring training.
Given Young’s injury history I can’t see any team willing to pony up any big dollars or even a major league deal for him. The very little we saw of Young last season was tantalizingly good, but it was only 24 innings.
I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing him back on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training where he can battle Dillon Gee, Chris Schwinden and Chuck James for the number five spot in the rotation.
Young, 32, went 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts for the Mets.

“He’s the kind of guy we might re-sign under the right circumstances.”
translation, he’d basically work for the minimun… this is getting even more pathetic by the day…
Better get used to it…unless the Wilpons win the lottery…..
We need starting pitching depth. If Young is willing to take a minor league deal, I’d say this is a good risk.
So if we need SP depth why go get a guy who will be injure after 4 starts??? at this point go and get a bum who can at least pitch .. don’t go and get a bum who will be out after 2 weeks into the season..
Don’t know….maybe b/c what’s left on the FA market would be harder to talk into a minor league contract? And Young said he’d be willing to sign one?
I’d like to see Young come back. but we have a team that has to quibble over 500K vs a million. smh. so best of luck to Chris and i hope he has a chance somewhere this season. seems like a real nice guy, i get that his injury history is not good, but the guy never gives up.
Good to Sandy reads my e-mails.
Sandy should have signed him to that minor league contract last season. Having pitched just 96 innings the prior two years (and only 20 in 2010) Sandy knew of Young’s recent history of arm injury and still blew $1.1 million last year on salary alone. Who knows if any of the cost of rehab was abosrbed by the organization as well, since it be passed down by the insurance in ways over than just fees absorbed by contract. one way or the other as it is for us.
I doubt it since this is business, but perhaps invited young to sign a minor league contract and an invite to spring training in the hope that he is revitalized is Sandy’s way of hoping to save face from last year’s disasterous signings?
And is this a wise move? What if he pitches well in Port St. Lucie and therefore takes a spot on the 40 man roster which has already caused the Mets problem with the Hairston re-signing? What happens if he blows his arm out again after another 24 innings? That would be nothing to show but the loss of another player on the 40 man roster due to Young temporarily taking his place.
By the end of ST the 40 man issues will likely work themselves out. A few guys will suck and get cut, and odds are some will end up on the 60 day DL.
and last year, he actually gave good value for the $$. project his season out and it would have been 8.8 mill.
We don’t really know how important a decision that might be, given the fact that the Mets already had to release others that some have questioned about being wise in order to get down to that 40 man squad. Too many have run out of options. And there are those rule 5 picks.
Granted, for the other 29 clubs signing Young was a low cost option with no real risk other than the $1.1 million contract which could be absorbed as just a risk not working out. But we’re talking about club number 30. The Wilpons are trying to save every penny they could (they they fired those low paying office workers shows every penny count). So for them, that $1.1 million could have been cut in half with a rookie call-up, etc. Every penny now counts so they can retain ownership.
And even if he remained healthy, one cannot project what one over a course of a season will do, not with Young’s arm. What about arm fatigue which Sandy says is his main concern with Santana? It would have caught up with Young as well. And who knows how effective he would have continued.
For that $1.1 million the Mets could have picked up another washed up player who could at least fill the roster spot for the year – that’s all they were looking for. With Young again injured, the Wilpons wound up paying two salaries for one roster spot. Hey, that’s not good from a bean counter’s perspective (Sorry about that, Sandy, but couldn’t resist).
I guess a minor league deal with no guarantees would be ok. But this makes two years in a row he has basically said the same thing: that his arm feels better than it has in a long time. We all know how that worked out last year. He is just way too injury prone to depend on. But, like I said, if it’s only a minor league deal what have you got to lose and there is a chance he might actually be healthy.
Report is that Sandy has assigned a scout to the Hospital of Special Surgery to scout for the next great Met Acqusition Jessup, Xtreeme and Donal can tout and cheer about!
..and if the guy has a comeback season they could trade him for prospects. That’s the way it is now – let’s hope Santana can come back strong and trade him for prospects, maybe Jason Bay will have a comeback season and we can move his contract and get a prospect or 2. Even David Wright, let’s hope he starts off strong so we can move him for prospects
Or if Andres Torres returns to 2010 form we can gain..cough, cough,..”value”…and sell high…….for prospects.
Let’s just forget that if all these players have good seasons and if Sandy even bothered to compete that maybe the could actually contend? No – just move everybody for prospects so that when those prospects come to the bigs we can move them for more prospects when we’re NOT SURE we can compete – like Oakland does
Sandy Alderson will not resign Chris Young to a minor league deal because Young and his agent know that there is always a team around with sufficient cash to take a chance as Sandy did last season. Young is damaged goods period. I watched him and while he looked really strong out there, it is easy to see the amount of torque that his mechanics place on his arm and shoulder!
and for all you “comedians” who are bashing everything that is going on because you can’t accept that the team is going to be lousy for a year or so…..SNAP OUT OF IT!
and don’t quit your day jobs!
