Alderson: “I Don’t Think Jose Ending Up Anywhere Outside Of Queens Is Ideal”
Here is some real news on Jose Reyes. I say real because unlike the last few days of jet-fueled speculation, the following quotes are straight from Sandy Alderson himself.
The following quotes are not from Mets people, people with knowledge of the situation, team insiders, a rival GM, or any other sources cited on MetsBlog or WFAN.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is currently at the GM Meetings and minced no words while talking to reporters about Jose Reyes. Lets begin with this one, my favorite:
“I don’t think Jose ending up anywhere outside of the borough of Queens is ideal.”
The man charged with putting the organization back on the road to sustainable success said that he has remained in contact with Jose Reyes’ representatives and is completely tuned in to everything that is going on.
“The goal is to stay on top of events as they develop,” he said. “That ’s one important goal of the next three or four days, is to further understand what other clubs are thinking.”
The cool and calm GM is brilliant in how he is playing his hand and despite the rants of some fans who wish for him to show all his cards, Alderson in unswayed and committed to his strategy.
“I don’t want to give you the false impression that we or they are anywhere along a road,” said general manager Sandy Alderson. “I still think it’s early, notwithstanding all the background noise from the last week.”
This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful we have a general manager who doesn’t make moves based on what the lunatic fringe are screaming about on any given day.

This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful we have a general manager who doesn’t make moves based on what the lunatic fringe are screaming about on any given day”
of course, i expected this article to be an butt kissing article about alderson.. you’re thankful to have a GM wo doesn’t make moves based on lunatic fringe??? how about making a move at all!!!!?? how about that..?? what is he waiting for? nopt only that, but based on what we saw last year, and how he’s said the payroll will be around the $100 this year is he giving any indication he’ll try to improve the roster!?!? yeah, ok, wake me up when this man is done cleaning the financial issues of the wilpons and A REAL GM is in charge…
Lerner, you have to admire the fact that you said
“This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful we have a general manager who doesn’t make moves based on what the lunatic fringe are screaming about on any given day”
And then look at who your 1st comment was from. Love it
Have we seen each other face to face as i askd you to, i am sure you wouldn’t have been an ahole in this thread now would you?? what? does it bother you i don’t kiss alderson’s butt like you and others here do?? most of whom LOVE sabermetrics and the crap it “allegedly” brings to the game?
The GM of the World Series winning St. Louis Cardinals believes sabermetrics bring something valuable to the game. Are you now claiming he’s wrong and that you’re smarter than him?
You can argue the AMOUNT of time/value a team should put on sabermetrics til the cows come home.
However, you look FOOLISH when you claim sabermetrics bring nothing to the game etc.
AND THE ACTUAL MANAGER of the WS winning team the st louis cardinals, TONY LARUSSA said sabermetrics BRINGS nothing, NOTHING to the game, SH**** on moneyball and its inaccuracy, and once again does not think the saber heads apport as much to the game as its reported out there… you did watch the press conferences in the WS right!?? i am sure you are very aware of this..
Alex: Stop yelling and sit down before you fall down
LaRussa never said that. You’re already turning what he said into your point of view. LaRussa questioned the value of On Base Percentage in building a team. Rule #1 of sabr stats: OBP is not a SABR stat.
#2 LaRussa didn’t build the roster. He manages the game. Both jobs are important, but you can’t discredit a General Managers point of view on HOW to build a roster simply because the Manager may or may not doubt it. The Manager’s job is to manage 27 outs a day. Not to build a roster.
A manager in almost every sense of their job shouldn’t be bothered at all with sabermetrics. Sure, Girardi says he likes to use advanced stats but as a Manager you likely don’t have a lot of time to look up which reliever has a better FIP before you bring him in. A manager’s job is mostly based on gut reaction, not so much advanced data. So I don’t see why or how anybody would be offended or applaud La Russa “not liking sabermetrics.”
He doesn’t build the team. Get that, and you’ll be a happier human being
i feel so bad for you.. you level of arrogance has no limits.why is it that you who are nothing but a 20 year old something seem to wanna know more baseball than everyone in this site?? you obviously di not watch th press conference i which larussa was just sh***** on moneyball, and pretty much the saberheads, but no, you’re arrogance somehow made you believe he said something else, for once, even though i know you don’t have the balls with you move on and admit you have absolutely no idea what was said and move on ok.. stop trying to THINK YOU KNOW eveerything.. please, stop being an arrogant jerk and just pass on something you had no knowledge of ok.. please…
Did Donal write that post for you because it sounds very similar to the drivel he posts!
As a contributing Writer to this site I think you should be held to the higher standard to set an example of what type of posts do not belong here!
And if you can’t well….
How are actual quotes from the GM butt kissing? Has Pujols been signed, Fielder? What are the other REAL GM’s waiting for?
Cardinals gave pujols an offer.. the brewers kept it real with their fans and themselves and said they weren’t gonna be in fielder’s ballpark and have moved on since, sandy on the other hand keeps thinking met fans are all stupid, he’s made no offer and keep saying they’re talking.. about what!?!?! isn’t the whole point of talking is to come up at least with an offer!? this man will destroy the mets, i am shocked MLB will watch this large market team allow the wilpons and this guy to just ruin this franchise… but, we all know the wilpons and sandy are boys with selig.. this is just pathetic
Very well said , Alex……..
Cardinals made an offer before Spring Training, nothing since. It’s the rumor time of year, happens every year same time. Right now the Mets have a big stake it in.
With some having a hatred for Alderson, for whatever their reasons may be, will go along with every rumor to solidify their hatred. If they cannot resign Reyes, it will be a sad day, but that doesn’t mean he’s ruining the franchise………..oh the drama……….
key word is offr.. what have the mets and the genius alderson done?? sit around, waiting for a market and see ifd they can afford it?!? please.. gimme a break.. his honeymoon may be over pretty soon here in NY…
Alderson made an offer to Team Reyes during the season. They elected not to talk.
He Wanted to talk… that’s all he does.. talk… talk.. never anything about winning, just TALK!!
Isn’t that what an offer is? You asked what Alderson did and held up the Cardinals making an offer to Pujols in March as a positive example. the Mets made one during the season. Team Reyes really just wanted to hit the open market. You need at least 2 sides to make a deal and Reyes was not interested.
not an alderson fan
I just want to know in what book it states Alderson has to make an offer NOW, as opposed to after any and all offers from other teams have come in.
Showing cards or not showing cards, if he does not sign Reyes it will be the straw that breaks the camels back for many Mets fans. The signing of this GM was a BIG mistake, as was the signing of the new manager last year. I know the Mets problems are bigger then just that, and the main objective is to get the Wilpons out, but signing washed up GM, who might have been good years ago, but not in todays game, and signing that Mgr., who was never any good, EVER, was just another of many examples of the Mets showing their fans that they just don’t give a crap about NL baseball in NY…….Also, I don’t want to hear that there is no money in the organization, as we all know this is not true…..Lets remind the owners and the brass that run the Mets that this is not Pitssburgh or Montreal or any small market team. This is NY, the largest market that there is, and the NL baseball team better start acting that way!!!!!!!!
Terry Collins was a wonderful acquisition. I don’t know where you’re coming from. He was a huge upgrade from Jerry Manuel, and as far as Alderson is concerned he has restocked the farm system and probably will continue to restock it especially after Omar drained it or flooded it with top heavy prospects.
Wait, how has Anderson “restocked” the system? He hasn’t been around long enough to get any real progress with the farm.
This isn’t a criticism of Anderson, it’s a fact that many people don’t understand. A GM needs to run a team for several years before we see his true effect on the system. Just because you draft a bunch of first rounders doesn’t mean the system is restocked, drafting quality players (from every round) and signing quality FA’s from other markets and trading for developing talent and THEN properly developing that talent over a few years is how to rebuild the system.
We won’t know how good Sandy is for a couple more years and probably not until he’s gone.
Omar had some problems as GM; handling the Media, handling injuries, handling success and handling the development of young talent.
Omar did make some trades for young players who didn’t work out, that’s what happens when you trade for prospects. Only only gave up on one player who’s had (sustainable) success post Mets. Omar’s system did give us…Murphy, Duda, Ike, Neise, Parnell, Gee, Mejia, Harvey, Flores, Nieuwenhuis, Familia and F-Mart along with several others…and he got Santana from it.
Now who knows what any of these players will amount to…Some will make it, some won’t and some might be true stars. It’s a gamble. But I do know one thing, look at where the system was before Omar took over and look at how he left it, it’s in much better shape. What Sandy does with it? we won’t know for several years. Drafting high doesn’t mean drafting good.
Just saying with the time he has had he has restocked a good part of the farm system, and I agree that we will see how he does in the seasons yet to come. But in my defense to say that Alderson is washed up is an extremely biased statement.
Spot on! The first and only piece I’ve read about this Reyes situation that I can actually say is an accurate report. Thank you for adding some truth and sanity into the debate.
Truth and sanity? This post is extremely biased. It’s way over the top, he used a million adjectives to describe how great he’s doing, and we don’t even know if he’s going to sign here or not. And he calls the people who want the Mets to be more agrresive with this, the lunatic fringe.
This post isn’t truth and sanity, it’s insanity.
I wasn’t finished and it posted my comment. I just want to say that Alderson is playing this Reyes situation brilliantly. Sandy has the best poker face in the game.
Craig, good stuff and a nice balance to some of the doom and gloom stuff we see everywhere lately. One thing, though.
it is way too early to call Alderson a genius. We have no idea how this situation will end up and probably won’t be able to tell for years. Do I agree with how he is playing? Sure. But a lot of that is because he doesn’t have much of a choice.
Too many second guessers who scream when the team doesn’t go out and empty their wallets on free agents. Those same people are also the first to go nuts when a free agent doesn’t put up his normal numbers….
PLAYING IN NEW YORK IN FRONT OF THE SAVAGE MEDIA HOUNDS IS TOUGH…….
THE NEW REGIME IS NOT GOING TO PANIC AND OVERBID FOR ANYONE. AND WHETHER JOSE IS RESIGNED OR NOT THE TEAM IS IN A REBUILDING MODE BECAUSE OF IT’S PITCHING PROBLEMS.
IT IS GOING TO TAKE A FEW YEARS FOLKS..GET USED TO IT AND STOP ACTING LIKE RABID DOGS. IF YOU GUYS KNEW SO MUCH ABOUT BASEBALL…SANDY WOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN THE JOB.
This is very good news, but this is a terrible article.
“The cool and calm GM is brilliant in how he is playing his hand and despite the rants of some fans who wish for him to show all his cards, Alderson in unswayed and committed to his strategy.”
It’s way over the top. “unswayed”, “cool” and Calm”, “brilliant”, and he’s “committed”, is how you describe how he’s handling this, and at this point, we don’t even know if he’s going to sign here – For all we know, he can sign with the Marlins tomorrow.
“This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful we have a general manager who doesn’t make moves based on what the lunatic fringe are screaming about on any given day.”
And how can we take you seriously when you say the people who want Reyes signed are the “lunatic fringe”? So, your a lunatic if you want the Mets to resign their homegrown SS, who is in the prime of his career, and just won the batting title?
LOL and people accuse his detractors as the only ones who call Sandy a Genius!
We will see how smart Sandy is when we see where Reyes winds up and how we do if he goes elsewhere!
