Paulino Will Not Travel With Team, Will Workout At Mets Camp Instead

According to Zach Berman of the Star-Ledger, Ronny Paulino will not travel with the team to Disney World to play the Braves this afternoon.

Paulino entered the Mets clubhouse a few minutes after 8 a.m. this morning. He was greeted by the few remaining in the locker room after the team bus departed for the Braves’ spring training complex in Lake Buena Vista, including former Marlins teammate Taylor Tankersley.

After changing into workout clothing and meeting with Mets officials, Paulino finally had time to start working out at the Mets facility after missing almost a month because of visa issues in his native Dominican Republic.

“Kind of long, finally I went through and I’m here,” Paulino said. “I think it’s the process you have to go through by what happened last year [with a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs]. Whoever does it has to go through that.”

Paulino is due to catch in a minor league game on Sunday morning.

Ronnie Paulino has finally arrived in Port St. Lucie. Applause, please.

Terry Collins said he will develop some kind of a plan for Paulino to get acclimated with all the pitchers while getting up to speed with the rest of the team.

  • Paulino’s best chance is to catch all the Bullpen sessions until he is familiar enough to call a game.

In a way it’s probably a good thing for Thole that he didn’t get here in time.
I would rather Thole worry about his BA than his job security right now.

    • based on the way he has been playing, he certainly shouldn’t have to worry about that now. Not that he probably was before anyway.

      • True but if Paulino was here from the get go he might not have been as relaxed and pressed causing his bat to become a problem for him.

I think it worked out just fine. Paulino will be fine as a rest replacement for Thole but we owe it to ourselves to make Thole an everyday player and develop a solid and consistent guy the Pitchers can be comfortable with.

His bat improving is important but right now I think the immediate situation requires a catcher who can keep the Pitching situation as stable as possible.

  • Paulino who?
