Fernando Martinez Flexing His Muscles In Caribbean Series
Here’s some more positive news on the Mets front.
Last night, Mets outfield prospect Fernando Martinez belted a three-run homer and collected six RBI’s as the Leones clobbered Cibao in Game 3 of the Caribbean Championship Series. It was all part of a huge night for F-Mart who went 5-6 at the plate while tallying nine total bases.
It looks like Martinez is finding his stroke during this playoff series as he was batting a dismal .191 in 47 at-bats during the regular games leading up to the post season for the Leones.
There’s no reason to read more into this other than to take note of how F-Mart can sometimes show those flashes of greatness we keep hearing about. It was a solid performance for the kid and I thought I’d share it with our readers.
I still believe we have a future All Star with tremendous power potential in F-Mart.
If he could just stay healthy and string together a few hundred at-bats in AAA, we may see him sooner than you think, and I predict that his second cup of coffee will be much better than the first.

If I had to guess I’d say Jeff Francour shows us his typical scrub self this season and we may end up seeing FMart by July.
Nosh, sabremetrics(useless) aside try to realize that all the clamor for grit/heart resides in rf for this team. If Sabremetrics truly were that valuable in real world baseball, the A’s would be a dynasty instead of a punchline, Doc & Staw would be getting inducted in Cooperstown instead of a neighborhood in Queens more reminiscient of commode activity than grandeur.
While I apologize for any implied or actual insults to certain residents for my hyperbolic victreol, I can’t hide my disdain for Fantasy baseball’s intrusion into real life. FANTASY: creative imagination;a capricious or fantastic idea:CONCEIT.
I’m glad we didn’t make any drastic moves to trade F-Mart this off season. I was worried that he was on his way out after his latest injury last season. I remember Jose reyes had similar problems staying healthy when he first came up. I happened to catch F-Mart in a game last season and to see him up close is pretty amazing. His broad shoulders and build remind me so much of Beltran when he came up with KC. He doesn’t have the speed Beltran does, but I can see this guy being a consistent 35 homer guy in the very near future.
Im an internal optimist, and i think F-Mart might beat out Pagan for the centerfield position. I also read somewhere today the Mets could have Gerry Mathews for Castillo, why arent they jumping at that???
In the wake of the Beltran injury, I have been predicting a Martinez / pagan platoon
but we still need another power bat regardless
I’ve been posting on here for the past few days a what if scenario of F-Mart having a great spring, and Pagan having a so so spring. Do you then give the opening day CF job to F-Mart until Beltran gets back?
I would seriously consider carrying Fernando Martinez to play 1B instead of Murphy.
Let’s just hope it keeps up and it’s not just a flash in the pan. It would be great to have a bonafide OF’er come up internally. If so, we will have something to look forward to for 2011.
I really hope we just leave him alone in AAA and he stays healthy for a year and has that under his belt for 2011. Incidentally The Dominican Round Robin is played every year in January between the top 4 (out of 6) winter league teams 2 of whom play in Santo Domingo. Licey (always in the playoffs) and Escohido sp? newly resurgent so 6 days out of 7 there should be a game to watch for 5-10 bucks. The winner plays the winners of their round robins in PR, Mex and Ven at alternating sites each year. If you like baseball, beaches, beer, rum, music, and good times the DR round robin is a much better time than NYC in January and the baseball will probably be more fun (not necessarily MLB) than it will be in Queens this summer.
And I understand there are plenty of ways to gets wasted in Santo Domingo.
Not sure exactly what you mean Mask, Santo Domingo is just as safe or dangerous as most City’s. Depends more on you then it. If your not looking for trouble you’ll probably never find any. If your looking for some baseball and sun during the winter you’ll find them both there. By the way Escogido Vs. Gigantes 6:30 pm tonight ESPN Deportes.
It’s good to see Martinez finally started hitting down there. We did an overview of the Winter League on our site while Martinez was struggling.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens now that Minaya picked up Matthews, Jr. I heard something about the move partially being made to give Martinez some more time (possibly a full season) in AAA. I think Martinez will get back after he posts a few solid months at the minor league level.
Mike, he’s not an infielder. He’s still not big league ready and there won’t be room for him when he is. Trade him with Pelfrey,Moviel, and Tejada for Arroyo and Phillips. We upgrade our pitching plus we get an All Star caliber player at a position the organization is short on, 2B.
