Andy Martino of the Daily News also reports that the deal is an eight-year deal and that it replaces the 2013 option. The eight year, $138 million dollar contract essentially voids the option year contract.
Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports writes that that it was very important for David Wright to make more money than Johan Santana‘s $137.5 million deal and thus become the highest-paid player in New York Mets history “out of pride.” Joel Sherman of the NY Post getting more than Santana was no coincidence.
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Terry Collins will ask David Wright to become the official team captain of the New York Mets. If Wright accepts, he would become the first official team captain since closer John Franco retired.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Mets will not officially announce the deal today because Wright will have to pass a physical and other minor issues. An official press conference at Citi Field could come after the Winter Meetings in Nashville.
