With Wright Now Locked Up, Onto R.A.

Finally! After months and months of rumors, figures, opinions and speculation, the Mets all-star third baseman David Wright has now signed a longterm deal with the Amazin’s that will bring him through his age-37 season.

The new deal is reportedly worth $122 million over seven years. With his $16 million option picked up earlier this month, the contract will be for a grand total of eight-years and $138 million, making it the largest contract in franchise history, surpassing Santana’s deal of $137.5 million. The Mets now have their man, their franchise guy all locked up and could now very well complete his career with the New York Mets, and the New York Mets alone.

Now with Wright’s contract talks all out of the way and done with, it is onto the other Mets star entering his contract year; R.A. Dickey. Proclaimed by Dickey to be a “package deal”, the second half of the package now needs to get a new contract of his own. The reigning 2012 NL Cy Young award winner has had sporadic rumors of contract talks at best. There has been little talks of anything as far as Dickey goes. They are neither close to a deal nor are they anywhere near a possible trade. In fact, other GMs don’t believe Dickey is on the block. However there are also reports that Dickey is willing to take a hometown discount, and Adam Rubin is reporting that a two-year deal should get the job done and that the Mets seem “confident” that a deal will be reached.

One star down, one more to go. Glad to see the Mets organization invest a little bit once again after cutting payroll over $50 million last winter. Things are starting to look up in Metsville.
