Today is the day that most Mets fans take a sigh of relief that the organization was able to show the fans that they are more financially stable than most have thought. David Wright is a Met, probably until his last days on a baseball field.

This is something Mets fans have never seen before. Wright now becomes our version of Ripken, Gwynn, Helton, Chipper or Jeter. He may not become a Hall of Famer, time will tell – but there will be no doubt that he was our player.

It’s time to look forward, and not back on failed contracts by either recent front office. It’s not time to look at what could have been, but what may be?

The Mets have two corner infielders that make up the core of this franchise. Ike Davis will turn 26 before Opening Day which means his best days may be over the next 4 years. I believe the Mets need to do whatever they can to be as competitive as possible with Ike in his prime.

When you pair Davis & Wright up with Tejada, Niese, Harvey, Wheeler and Familia you have a solid core that could all be ready to contribute during the 2013 season.

With the addition of a playoff spot, we saw teams like Baltimore & Oakland prove the naysayers wrong. With the Giants winning the World Series, we saw that the 25 man roster is most important – not 2 or 3 players.

The Mets now have decisions to make on the following players: R.A. Dickey, Daniel Murphy and Wilmer Flores. If Flores’ future is at 2B, then Murphy needs to be packaged (or vice versa). If the Mets feel Dickey’s contract demands exceed their baseline, then he needs to be packaged.

The 2013 Mets need a corner OF and bullpen help. If they can find their way to another CF or C, then that would be nice as well.

The 2014 Mets have very little guaranteed payroll. Outside of unknown arbitration figures, the Mets are on the hook for about $31million in payments in 2014. This is assuming Wright’s average of $17.4m is accurate.

If the Mets are satisfied with Murphy for now, then Wilmer Flores could net the Mets a nice package that they can use today.

Perhaps we may see players like Cody Ross, and yes Francisco Rodriguez in a Mets uniform in 2013?

Call me crazy, but I think the Mets can figure things out pretty quickly if they play their cards right.
