Mets CubsIt’s hard to understand quotes like the ones Jeff Wilpon made this afternoon. After all, your eye tells you one thing while your ear tells you something else. Until we see the results it will be hard to understand but according to Wilpon, Sandy Alderson and his staff will have payroll flexibility moving forward.

Wilpon said “He does have payroll flexibility, whether through free agency or trades” (NJ.com). It sounds like a trap.

Still, it feels like a statement by an ownership group that has been scrutinized lately for their misleading ways. Alderson said that “Free agency is a crap shoot…On the other hand you expect to hit a certain number of times. That’s an area where we hopefully will continue to be active but also more successful than we’ve been in the past.”

It’s not exactly a video tape of Fred and Jeff Wilpon signing a big check, but for now it’s a start. The team has supreme confidence in Alderson and his management group and the entire organization believes they are close. Alderson described them as needing to improve by 10 to 12 games in the off-season, as they use the Nationals as their measuring stick.
