Cespedes Yoenis

Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, says that our very own New York Mets have the best outfield in all of baseball right now.

Led by the “Yo” show, Yoenis Cespedes has put up such incredibly gaudy numbers that he has put himself into the NL MVP conversation. Cespedes has hit a career-high 35 home runs (tied for eighth in the majors), 17 home runs since joining the Mets on August 1st, tied for most in the majors, and nine home runs in September, also (most in the majors.

Let’s also not forget Curtis Granderson who has thrived in the leadoff spot this year. The Grandy Man has drawn a walk in 11 consecutive games dating to September 4 (16 walks total during this streak). He had scored 12 runs this month, tied for fifth-most in the NL. Granderson is currently sixth in the NL with 87 runs scored and fifth with 84 walks. He has also hit 23 home runs this year, including a franchise-record seven leadoff homers.

To the rookie we go, Michael Conforto. Does this guy look like a professional hitter already or what? Conforto who made his ML Debut on July 24 has been quite the addition to this roster. He is hitting .297 with seven home runs and 22 RBI. Five of his seven home runs have either given the Mets a lead or tied the game. He also has impressed defensively, showing off a sweet canon of an arm leading to five outfield assists, good enough for second-most among NL rookies.

The Mets also have Michael Cuddyer and Juan Lagares who both hit well against left-handed pitching and of course Lagares provides elite defense late in games. The outfield is largely responsible for the offensive production that has carried the team to the top of the NL East.

Ironically, when the season started, it was the Miami Marlins that many were tabbing as having the best outfield in baseball. But with Giancarlo Stanton missing most of the season with a broken hamate bone, a down year for Marcell Ozuna, and a slow start by Christian Yelich, things deteriorated rapidly for the Marlins trio.

Based on numbers alone, this team does seem to have the best outfield in all of MLB, with a current OPS since August 1st of .982, which leads the majors. If this dynamic trio can keep doing what they do, we could be looking at a nice deep run into the 2015 post-season.
