After Friday night’s 6-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies, manager Terry Collins held a team meeting to address the malaise after the team’s third consecutive loss and to address the mounting frustration with failing to produce with runners in scoring position.

“First of all, we have a good team,” Collins said. “We’re going through a rough time right now. We haven’t hit with runners in scoring position. Everybody knows it. We’ve got to quit rubbing it in our faces every day. We’ve got to lighten it up a little bit. We’ve still got a lot of games to play. We’re not dead. We’re still in the hunt.” (ESPN New York)

The Mets are 38-42 since May 1 and have fallen to 53-49 on the season. Their loss tonight was the fifth straight against Colorado and it dropped them to 7.0 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals, and 2.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot.

After going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Friday night, the Mets’ team average in those situations is now at an all-time franchise low and a league worst .202.

“These players, they’re smart guys. They’re getting it from their friends, everybody else — ‘You guys aren’t hitting with runners in scoring position.,” Collins continued. “And so it starts to build and starts to build and all of a sudden they go up there and their heads are not where it needs to be because they’re worried about making an out or not getting a hit.”

The Mets have scored 38 runs since the All-Star break, the fewest in the majors. They’ve scored just two runs over their last 20.0 innings.
