According to Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online, the Mets have been in contact with the Seattle Mariners regarding third baseman Kyle Seager.

Seager, 33, has spent the past 10 seasons in the Pacific Northwest after being drafted by the M’s in the third round of the 2009 draft, hitting .256/.326/.443 with 207 home runs, 706 RBIs, a 17.3% strikeout rate, and 112 wRC+.

The University of North Carolina alum played in all 60 games for the Mariners last season, hitting .241/.355/.433 with nine homers and 118 wRC+ in 248 plate appearances.

Since posting 11 outs above average (Statcast) at third base during the 2017 season, Seager’s defensive metrics at the hot corner have been inconsistent (-4 OAA in 2018, +1 OAA in 2019, +/- 0 OAA in 2020).

Though, in 2019, Seager’s three defensive runs saved and 8.2 ultimate zone rating per 150 games (FanGraphs) ranked sixth and third, respectively, among qualified MLB third baseman.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported on Thursday that New York had spoken with the Cubs about acquiring former NL MVP Kris Bryant, lending credence to the idea that New York isn’t entirely comfortable with J.D. Davis at the position heading into 2021.

We’ll keep you posted with new information as it becomes available.
