According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, reports that the Mets have had “recent trade talks” with the Cubs about third Kris Bryant.

Nightengale also believes that the Mets are still engaged with free agent reliever Liam Hendriks and free agent center fielder George Springer.

The Cubs started their sale last week when they traded starter Yu Darvish and catcher Victor Caratini to the Padres for lower level prospects.

Bryant, 29, becomes a free agent following the 2021 season.

Since making his MLB debut in 2015, Bryant has compiled a .284/.385/.516 batting line with 138 home runs, 403 RBIs, 139 wRC+, and 27.8 wins above replacement (FanGraphs). Those numbers were slightly tarnished by his .206/.293/.351 (76 wRC+, 0.5 fWAR), injury-marred 2020 campaign (finger, oblique).
