Buster Olney recently spoke with an evaluator who suggested that the Mets should try and acquire SS Jean Segura from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Segura had a very strong rookie season for Milwaukee, hitting at a .294/.329/.423 clip over a span of 146 games. He also hit 12 home runs and drove in 49 runs, while stealing 44 bases.

Last year, Segura suffered the sophomore blues, as he only managed to hit a dismal .249/.289/.326 in the same amount of games.

However, with the uncertainty surrounding Wilmer Flores‘ ability to sustain a whole season as an everyday shortstop, and the questions surrounding whether or not his lack of range and his limited defensive play will come back to bite the Mets, Segura could make perfect sense.

The Brewers have only won four games this year, and could most certainly have a fire sale if things don’t get better so they can rebuild for the future.

Segura turned down a long-term contract deal from the Brewers after his rookie season, and is arbitration eligible this Winter.

Olney notes that Segura would be a quality stopgap for the time being until highly touted prospect Amed Rosario is ready to come up to the big leagues.

An area in which the Brewers are lacking are young, strong pitchers, which the Mets have plenty of. So does it make sense for the Mets to try and swing a deal? I think they should definitely go for it, especially if they are serious about winning this year.

Remember, this is all just talk that has no legs at the moment, but it’s interesting to think about, and I think it would definitely be beneficial for the Mets to get stronger up the middle.
