Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are considering the idea of potentially trading Zack Wheeler and Edwin Diaz in the same deal in order to maximize the potential return.

This comes with the fact that Sherman hears that there are 16 teams showing serious interest in Wheeler, Diaz, and/or Noah Syndergaard.

However, the Mets won’t pair Syndergaard with Wheeler or Diaz, since they have received significant enough interest in Syndergaard that they don’t think it is necessary to pair him with anyone else to maximize that package.

Wheeler, 29,  also is mentioned in Sherman’s article as likely to be dealt as the Mets have received the type of interest that makes the likelihood that a team’s trade offer will be worth more than the ability to get compensation via the qualifying offer this offseason.

Meanwhile, the Padres are currently the favorites to acquire Syndergaard if he is dealt before the deadline, given the multiple trade possibilities they have the ability to offer the Mets. Furthermore, the Atlanta Braves are not too involved in Syndergaard negotiations despite the Mets sending Allard Baird and Omar Minaya to their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates.

Given the number of deals the Mets are looking into at the moment, there is now a growing belief that they will be major sellers. That being said, it’s expected that they will take their time and wait until at least Tuesday to do anything significant.

Diaz comes with three years of control after this one, while Syndergaard comes with two, and Wheeler is a free agent this upcoming offseason.
