Sandy Alderson spoke to a gathering of reporters at Citi Field before tonight’s game between the Mets and the Rockies. The purpose of which was to explain the team’s plan regarding Johan Santana moving forward.

“The New York Mets are going to shutdown Johan Santana for the remainder of 2012 season.”

Santana had an MRI yesterday which showed and inflammation in his lower back. He will be placed on the 15 day disabled list. “At this point we do not expect him to pitch the rest of the season,” Alderson said.

The left-hander will not need and surgery and all that has been prescribed is rest.

Since Santana’s no-hitter in late May, he has been on the disabled list with a sprained ankle and has not pitched well when on the mound. After tossing 134 pitches in making Mets history, Santana has gone 3-7 with an 8.27 ERA in 10 starts.

In spring training, Collins thought that if Santana could get to 28 starts on the season he would have a big year. He has started 21 games thus far.

Mets prospect Collin McHugh will get the start tomorrow in the series finale against the Rockies.

McHugh, an 18th-round pick in 2008 out of Berry College in Georgia, tossed seven scoreless innings Saturday at Fenway Park against Triple-A Pawtucket.

With Buffalo this season, he is 2-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts. He opened the season at Double-A Binghamton. With the B-Mets, he put up a 13-7 record and 2.68 ERA in 30 appearances (28 starts) over two seasons.

So since opening day, we’ve lost three-fifths of our starting rotation in Mike Pelfrey, Dillon Gee and now Johan Santana…

Tough break for Johan, but I think we can all agree he gave us more than anyone expected oh and of course there was that whole no-hitter thing…
