After hitting .276/.447/.517 over his last 12 games, the New York Mets rookie shortstop Amed Rosario is on the bench tonight for the series opener against the Washington Nationals.

Rosario, 22, has four extra-base hits (two doubles and two triples) in his last five games and has looked more relaxed at the plate recently.

According to Steve Gelbs of SNY, Mets manager Mickey Callaway gave some insight as to why he was giving his talented young shortstop the night off in the middle of a very hot stretch.

Callaway said that he’s giving Rosario the night off, “in part, because of how well he’s been playing”.

Callaway acknowledged the “noticeable strides in his approach”, and also alluded to the fact that keeping the neophyte locked in at the plate would be a tough thing to do against Washington’s starter tonight, Max Scherzer.

Jose Reyes will start at shortstop instead on Thursday night with Jose Bautista at third base.
