The Colorado Rockies (19-29)  defeated the Mets (21-20) Monday at Citi Field by of a final of 3-2. It was the Mets third straight loss. The injury bug bit again as Johneshwy Fargas struck the center field wall and was removed from the game with an AC Joint Sprain in his left shoulder. Mets Manager Luis Rojas said Fargas will have an MRI on Tuesday.

James McCann made his first start of his career at first base and made an electric defensive play ranging far to his right to start a three-to-one put out. McCann also homered in the game.

David Peterson took the bump Monday night, as he looked to bounce back from a struggling start against the Atlanta Braves. He has struck out 46 batters in his eight appearances this season. It was a struggle for Peterson at the beginning of the game. He gave up two solo home runs in the 2nd inning to Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz which gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead. Peterson settled in for the most part after the 2nd. He kept the Mets in the game pitching six innings. The Mets were desperate for some length out of their starter. His final line tonight, three earned runs, three walks, and five strikeouts.

Jacob Barnes was called in to pitch the 7th and 8th. He kept his solid pitching campaign rolling tossing two scoreless innings. The only blemish was two walks, one to Elias Diaz and the other to C.J. Cron.

Yennsy Diaz made his second appearance as a Met in the ninth, pitching a second scoreless inning of his career.

The Mets offense struggled again for the most part, only being able to scratch out two hits through the first seven innings. There was a lack of production towards the top of the order especially the one and two hitters. Francisco Lindor batted second, continued to struggle going 0 for 4, with a strikeout. Jonathan Villar slotted in leadoff was 1 for 4. Lindor and Villar were 1 for 8 combined. In order for this lineup to produce, the top two in the lineup must do better.

McCann getting the start at 1st base seemed to give him a boost of confidence. McCann was hitting in the third spot. In the bottom of the seventh, he blasted a home run in the 7th over the left-field wall breaking Austin Gomber‘s shut out. That cut the deficit to 3-1.

In the bottom of the 9th, Brandon Drury pinched hit for Khalil Lee. Rojas did it for the righty lefty situation with Gomber still out on the mound. Drury homered to left field for his first home run as a New York Met giving the team some hope only being down 3-2. Patrick Mazeika was the next batter, pinch-hitting for the pitcher’s spot. He laced a line drive into right field. Bud Black pulled Austin Gomber out after that at-bat. Carlos Estevez came in for the save situation. He faced Villar and struck him out on a 3-2 fastball for the first out of the inning. Mazeika was still at 1st. Next, Lindor had a chance to send us home happy, but he flew out to left-field for the second out of the inning. McCann got the last chance to be the hero, with a runner at second after a wild pitch. McCann struck out which ended the game with a final score of 3-2.

Jacob deGrom (3-2, 0.68 ERA, 65K) will make the start for the Mets tomorrow for the second game of this series. DeGrom has missed his last two starts due to right side tightness. He threw a rehab assignment last Thursday that looked great, striking out 8 of the 10 batters he faced in St. Lucie. Kyle Freeland will be the probable pitcher for the Rockies. Freeland will be making his 2021 debut. He has been sidelined since March 23rd. Game time will be a 7:10 PM start on SNY and WCBS 880.
