The Athletic reports there’s a significantly greater likelihood the Mets trade Clay Holmes than the team signing him to an extension. The Athletic had previously reported the Mets and Holmes were talking about an extension to keep the starting pitcher in New York longer.
Holmes can opt out of his $12 million option for the 2027 season, and almost assuredly will given his success as a starter with the Mets.

The Chicago White Sox are reportedly interested in New York Mets’ starting pitcher Clay Holmes. According to a report by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Chicago sent their special assistant, Nick Hostelter, to keep tabs on the rehabbing pitcher.
Holmes, who broke his right fibula on May 15, has a 2.39 ERA across 52 2/3 innings this season. He was terrific in his first full season as a starter, going 12-8 with a 3.53 ERA across 165 2/3 innings in 2025.
The 33-year-old is on rehab assignment with the Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A). Brooklyn’s game got rained out on Saturday when Holmes was suppose to make his first start. He was, however, able to still get some work in. There has been no news on when his next appearance is slated for.
Holmes has an opt-out in his contract following the 2026 season. He signed a three-year, $38 million deal as a free agent prior to the 2025 season. With Holmes only due $12 million 2027, he is surely going to exercise that opt-out given he will be in for a substantial payday.
With that being said, and despite the report of the White Sox interest, Holmes and the Mets were reportedly set to begin extension conversations in the near future.
Holmes, among several other Mets, are likely to hear their names discussed ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
