The Mets (46-51) beat the San Diego Padres (43-56) on Monday night in the first game of their west coast trip.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets tonight and began the game in dominant fashion. He struck out the first four batters he faced, including the first three on only ten pitches.

DeGrom looked incredible through six innings, but gave up a long home run to Hunter Renfroe in the seventh that went all the way on top of the roof in left field. He would allow another run in the eighth on an RBI double by Carlos Asuaje. He finished with 8.0 innings and 100 pitches while recording eight strikeouts, allowing only five hits, and walking only two batters. This was deGrom’s 12th win of the season and eighth consecutive.

Hunter Renfroe hit another home run off of Addison Reed in the ninth. Reed then allowed two runners to get on after recording the first out. Jabari Blash was within inches of a three-run, walk-off home run, but instead would strikeout on the next pitch. Matt Szczur would fly out to Jay Bruce to end the game to secure the victory and his 17th save of the season.

Hitting:

The Mets started an offensive attack on Clayton Richard early as Wilmer Flores hit a solo home run in the second inning.

They continued scoring in the third inning as Yoenis Cespedes would drive in Asdrubal Cabrera on an RBI triple. Jay Bruce followed up with an RBI single on the next pitch to drive in Cespedes and give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Michael Conforto hit a double and later scored on a second RBI single by Jay Bruce.

The Mets scored a run after getting two outs to start the eighth inning after Jose Reyes legged out an infield single and then stole second for his 500th career stolen base. Travis d’Arnaud followed that up with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.

Asdrubal Cabrera recorded three hits, while Jay Bruce and Lucas Duda both recorded two of their own in the Mets 12-hit attack on Clayton Richard.

On Deck:

The Mets will send Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.05 ERA) to the mound against Jhoulys Chacin (9-7, 4.26 ERA) of the San Diego Padres in the second game of a four-game series. The game starts at 10:10 P.M. and will be aired on SNY.
