In an update to this story, Mike Puma of the New York Post says the Mets front office told him that they remain committed to Terry Collins as their manager despite the team’s recent freefall.
He will not be fired at the end of this season.

One should always be careful what he says in anger, and Terry Collins may have really gotten himself into a deep hole after comments he made about the team quitting after last night’s 16-1 loss.
This afternoon at Citi Field, Collins told reporters he regrets making his comments about the team possibly quitting.
“So, as I sat there on the bench last night, I was saying, ‘What’s my next move?’ I thought maybe they need to know — everybody’s frustrated, but let’s just see who’s willing to rise up again and give it another shot. And so I probably did it the wrong way. But I believe in what we do here. We’re going to grind it out on a daily basis.”
Collins said his intention was to fire the team up and not to throw them under the bus or challenge their integrity which is how it came off to many including the players.
He said that after meeting with every player, he believes they are all equally as angry as he is with the way the season is ending.

This could be the beginning of something, or it could be nothing at all, but the last two times Collin’s lost his clubhouse it resulted in him eventually quitting or being dismissed after the season.
Collins’ antics were damaging last night. How damaging will remain to be seen.
