It’s tough to remember a free agent market that has been this slow in recent history with a large portion of the top players still available despite Lorenzo Cain signing with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night.

Maybe the Cain signing combined with the trade of Christian Yelich (also to the Brewers) is what the market needed to heat up what has been a freezing cold stove since the winter meetings in December.

The market has been so stagnant that the players are discussing a possible free agent training camp according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Teams are weary of giving any of the top free agents in excess of five year deals with J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer and Yu Darvish all hoping for a contract in that are.

Martinez, clearly the best hitter on the market, has seen little interest outside of the Boston Red Sox who reportedly offered him a five-year deal already. Hosmer seen a limited market as well that seems to be down to the San Diego Padres or returning to the Kansas City Royals.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas and closer Greg Holland are two more of the top free agents left on the market and again two names we’ve heard very little in the way of interest. All five of the aforementioned players have Scott Boras as their agent who has been critical of teams spending this offseason.

The current crop of free agents would certainly make for an exciting spring camp to watch. Enough so that it would be fun to take a look at what kind of 25-man roster we could make with them.

C – Alex Avila

This starting group took a hit on Thursday when Cain signed with the Brewers but is still pretty solid outside of shortstop.

SP – Yu Darvish
SP – Lance Lynn
SP – Alex Cobb
SP – Jake Arrieta

I think some teams would be lining up to have this as their rotation and there is a ton more depth when you include Jaime Garcia, R.A. Dickey, Jeremy Hellickson and Andrew Cashner.

INF – Eduardo Nunez
INF – Todd Frazier
OF – Jon Jay
OF – Carlos Gomez
C – Jonathan Lucroy

Above average bench that’s for sure, shows you why some teams are waiting around to get value deals.

CL – Greg Holland
SU – Matt Albers
SU – Tony Watson
ROOGY – Peter Moylan
LOOGY – Jorge de la Rosa
2nd LOOGY – Xavier Cedeno

Bullpen has been the one area that teams have been aggressive in and have left only a few top guys available.
