Following a sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves that saw them relinquish the division lead for good, the New York Mets came into Tuesday’s doubleheader looking for any good mojo they could get. An offensive spark was much-needed, and Brandon Nimmo was able to provide that on the way to a pair of wins over the Washington Nationals.

After a 4-for-13 series in Atlanta, Nimmo picked up right where he left off in his second plate appearance in Game 1. With two outs in the bottom of the third, he scorched a Cory Abbott slider down the right field for a two-run double to give New York an early 2-0 lead.

During his next turn at-bat in the bottom of the fourth, Nimmo turned around a fastball from Abbott and hit it out to right-center. His 15th of the season made it 4-0 Mets.

Nimmo’s third hit of the game, which was also his third-straight, came off reliever Jordan Weems in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Game 1 marked Nimmo’s first three-hit game since September 18 and his first home run in almost a month, with his last coming on September 11. Building off of that, he had not homered at Citi Field since August 27.

In Game 2, Nimmo started the scoring off yet again, this time with a leadoff homer off Paolo Espino in the bottom of the first for his 16th of the year. He would come up again during the inning and drive in two more runs on a single off of Reed Garrett, which pushed the lead to 7-0.

Before being pulled in the sixth, Nimmo added a double in the bottom of the third off Mason Thompson. He would finish the game with a 3-for-3 line.

A theme of Nimmo’s production today was breaking trends in his own game. He had three balls-in-play that registered at over 100 miles per hour in Game 1 and two in Game 2. This is notable because Nimmo is not typically known to produce hard contact at a substantial rate, ranking below the 50th percentile in hard-hit rate and barrel percentage according to Baseball Savant.

Nimmo was able to find some success at home as well, which is something that has plagued him throughout the season. Coming into today, he had a 96 wRC+ and .635 OPS at Citi Field this year, which was quite a far cry from his 154 wRC+ and .898 OPS on the road.

The doubleheader was also his first time with home runs in back-to-back games since April 12th and 13th, and his first back-to-back games with three hits all season.

All in all, Nimmo finished the day with six hits over eight plate appearances, four of which went for extra bases. The Mets center fielder is hitting .274/.367/.433 with a 5.4 fWAR on the season.

As the regular season comes to a close, the Mets would greatly benefit from Nimmo heating up heading into the playoffs and could use some more strong performances from their leadoff hitter as he continues to put together a stellar campaign.
