Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets had the day off Monday, and now they welcome the Astros to town for a quick two-game set. The Astros swept the Mets at Minute Maid Park last week, with Yordan Álvarez smacking three homers in the two games.

This is Houston’s first trip to Citi Field since the last weekend of the 2014 season, in which the Mets took two of three. Carlos Carrasco (8-3, 4.42 ERA) will look to bounce back from a rough, injury-shortened start in Houston against Luis Garcia (5-5, 3.68 ERA), who got the win in the series finale last week. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 this evening.

The Mets moved Tylor Megill to the 60-day IL and claimed outfielder Kramer Robertson off waivers from the Braves. Megill left his outing on June 16 with a shoulder injury and was already expected to be shut down for at least four weeks. Additionally, the Mets activated Colin Holderman from the IL and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

Mets pitching prospect Cole Gordon underwent Tommy John Surgery. The 26-year-old was a 32nd-round pick of the organization back in 2019 and has a 3.51 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 115.1 innings (9.8 K/9) in his professional career. He made just one appearance for Syracuse this year before going on the IL.

Latest MLB News

MLB announced that 12 individuals were suspended for their roles in the brawl between the Angels and Mariners on Sunday. Angels’ manager Phil Nevin was handed a 10-game ban, while Jesse Winker was given seven games. Nevin wasn’t the only member of the Angels’ coaching staff that was disciplined — assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti, catching coach Bill Hasselman, bench coach Ray Montgomery, and interpreter Manny Del Campo were all banned from at least one game. Anthony Rendon (five games), Ryan Tepera (three games), J.P. Crawford (five games), Raisel Iglesias (two games), Andrew Wantz (three games), and Julio Rodriguez (two games) were all given suspensions, though it appears all except Wantz and Rendon are appealing.

The Mariners acquired veteran Carlos Santana from the Royals in exchange for pitchers Wyatt Mills and William Fleming. Santana only has a .690 OPS this year, but he has a 1.032 OPS in June and has a 17-percent walk rate on the season. Mills has made eight appearances for Seattle this year with a 4.15 ERA, but he has a 1.83 ERA in 16 appearances for Triple-A Tacoma. Fleming meanwhile has a 4.92 ERA in 14 starts for Class-A Modesto on the year. The Mariners acquired Santana along with J.P. Crawford from the Phillies in exchange for Jean Segura back in December of 2018, but he was sent to Cleveland 10 days later.

The Blue Jays have signed veteran righty Sergio Romo to a major-league contract according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The former All-Star is now 39 years old and was with the Mariners early in the season, but was shelled for 13 runs in 14.1 innings.

The Cardinals placed right-hander Jack Flaherty and Harrison Bader on the IL. Flaherty has made just three starts this season, totaling just eight innings. He was diagnosed with a shoulder strain. Bader meanwhile is dealing with plantar fasciitis.

On This Date in Mets History

2011: After not hitting one for almost two years, the Mets hit grand slams in consecutive innings at Comerica Park. Jason Bay smacks one to cap off a seven-run fourth inning, and Carlos Beltran hits one out in the fifth, with both slams coming against Detroit southpaw Daniel Schlereth. Josh Thole adds a solo homer of his own and Jose Reyes collects four hits as the Mets dominate the Tigers, 14-3.

2015: Steven Matz allows a home run to the first batter he faces in the major leagues, Brandon Phillips. However, Matz settles down and allows just two runs and five hits with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Furthermore, Matz goes 3-for-3 with four RBIs, becoming the first pitcher ever to drive in four runs in his MLB debut. Thanks to Matz, the Mets win 7-2 to finish off a sweep of the Reds.
