In his second “on-call” outing, David Peterson continued to impress and is giving Buck Showalter a reason to consider keeping the young left-handed pitcher in the Mets rotation.

Peterson has managed his last two outings to keep himself calm and cool as he tries to focus on the task at hand while awaiting the phone call he could get any minute, that he has been promoted officially to the title of dad as he and his wife are still expecting their first child.

Peterson dazzled on the mound once again on Sunday, throwing seven innings and giving up just two runs on four hits and one home run. He struck out eight over the course off his 104 pitches thrown (66 for strikes), but a walk-off home run for the Marlins off of Adam Ottavino forced Peterson to come away with a no-decision and his 2022 season record remains 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

This season, Peterson has struck out 50 over the course of 52.1 combined innings pitched through 11 games. He has a 1.24 WHIP as of Sunday.

The 26-year-old leftie from Colorado impressed Showalter on Sunday.

“That was real impressive, to see him go that deep in the game, especially when we were short in the bullpen,” Showalter said. “I was really happy for him, that’s a good step for him as a young pitcher.”

Peterson also impressed teammate Mark Canha.

“He’s been solid,” said Canha. “Some of the games that get away from him are bad luck, some bloop hits here and there. It feels like he’s had a lot of bad luck. I feel like today he was really focused on the ball, and focused on attacking.”

Peterson also spoke with the media after his outing and as expected, a highlighted topic was “paternity watch.” Peterson said they’re close. “We’ll see what happens tonight and tomorrow, but I’m definitely on call and we’re very close,” said the soon-to-be dad.
