Morning Briefing: Mets Look to Avoid Sweep in Atlanta

Good morning Mets fans! On Wednesday night the Mets fell 6-4 and dropped the series to the Braves overall. The club has now lost three games in a row coming off an eight-game winning streak.

After the Mets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, Mickey Callaway made a questionable decision to pull Steven Matz at only 79 pitches. Not only was the lefty cruising to retire the last 14 batters he faced, but Callaway also left him in to bat for himself before abruptly removing him.

Instead, the Manager went to his best reliever Seth Lugo, who did not have his stuff last night and in turn gave up four-runs in only a third of an inning.

On Thursday, the amazins’ look to avoid the sweep as Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.20 ERA) takes the mound in an attempt to stop the bleeding. The righty will oppose Met killer Julio Teheran (7-7, 3.35 ERA).

The Mets dodged a bullet as Jeff McNeil‘s MRI only revealed a mild hamstring strain, says Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

McNeil is expected to serve the minimum 10-days before he rejoins the club, barring any set-backs.

Old friend Ruben Tejada was called up to take McNeil’s spot. Tejada last played for the Mets in the 2015 playoffs, which saw the infamous Chase Utley dirty slide end his tenure in Flushing.

Mets infielder Adeiny Hechavarria has officially become a free agent after the Mets designated him for assignment last week, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen says Brandon Nimmo (neck) could begin rehab games as early as next week.

Brodie also said Jed Lowrie is hitting and fielding, but not yet running at full speed, as Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports tweeted.
