Mets fans, we’re back with a very special episode!

In honor of “Bobby Bonilla Day” on July 1st, I spoke with former MLB player, agent, and creator of the famed contract, Dennis Gilbert. Dennis and I had some great conversations about how a connection with the Brett family turned him from insurance sales to MLB agent, what goes into representing a player during free agency, the impact his deferred contracts had on baseball, Dennis tells me his most memorable meeting, and much more!

Why does the Bonilla contract continue to attract so much attention with deferred deals for big-money contracts being commonplace now? As Dennis quickly pointed out, “Because it was the first big one”:

“It’s funny because right on the tail of that I did a deal with the same club for Bret Saberhagen. But, the most interesting part is that when you are deferring, it comes down to what extra are they doing with their money? I used to tell players all the time, ‘You want to take some money out of the bank of today and put it in the bank of tomorrow’…and it worked, it still works for an awful lot of people.”
