Looking to find the form that prompted Baseball America to label him the Met prospect with the “best control” in January, Irving Cota struck out six and walked one in two scoreless innings Friday in the Surprise Saguaros’ 10-4 loss to the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. (Box score)

Cota, 22, of Mexico had an excellent start to the season at High-A Brooklyn, allowing two earned runs in 24 2/3 innings (0.73 ERA). The right-hander also made one appearance at Double-A Binghamton, where he gave up five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. An injury knocked him out of action for three months and he returned in early September to pitch two innings for for Low-A St. Lucie.

In Mike Mayer of MMO’s most recent rankings of Met prospects, he listed Cota as someone he left out of the top 50 because of injury.

Three other Met pitching prospects saw action Friday:

  • RHP Peyton Prescott, 22, got the start as an opener and allowed three earned runs on four hits over 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked two.
  • RHP Calvin Ziegler, 24, walked three and gave up three earned runs without giving up a hit over 1/3 of an inning. He took the loss.
  • RHP Ryan Lambert, 24, worked a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out two. He threw nine of 15 pitches for strikes.
