rafael montero debut 2Tonight the Mets return home to open up a series against the Washington Nationals. Rafael Montero (0-2, 5.40) returns from AAA to start in place of Jacob DeGrom to face Doug Fister (11-3, 2.49) for the second time this month.

Montero’s last start was back on May 30th when he received a no-decision in a 14-inning 6-5 defeat against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. He tossed 3.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned and one home run to Domonic Brown.

Before his call up, Rafael Montero was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on August 10th. He had hurled 14.2 scoreless innings in two starts and racked up 17 strikeouts, including a season-high 11 in his last start on August 5th at Sacramento. Montero allowed one hit over 8.0 shutout innings in that game.

David Wright has hit in 10 straight games dating back to August 2nd. He is hitting .286 (12-42) with four RBI during that stretch. It’s Wright’s fourth double-digit hitting streak this year and the 21st of his career, the most in team history.

Originally a deGrom day, Montero will be taking the start for deGrom as he heads to the DL for tendinitis. Montero will be squaring off against Doug Fister.
