The Mets (48-45) were defeated by the Nationals (50-41) by a score of 7-2 at Nationals Park in Washington DC monday night. The Nationals now have a 3-game lead in the division.

Pitching:

Matt Harvey started for the Mets this evening. After allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in the first 3 innings, he settled in and ended up going 7 innings, allowing no further runs allowing the last 14 batters to face him. He ended up walking 4 batters and struck out 3, allowing 5 hits.

Harvey was relieved by Alex Torres, who served up a two run home run to Ian Desmond. He also struck out a batter. Another great outing by Torres.

Offense:

Matt Harvey supplied the only offense today, slapping a 2-run single in the 4th inning to trim the Nationals’ lead to 5-2.

Daniel Murphy crushed a double in the first inning to put runners on second and third with one out, and then the Mets scored runs because that’s what they do in situations like that. Just kidding, Wilmer Flores hit a nubber back to the pitcher, then John Mayberry grounded out to third. So no runs after getting runners on second and third with one out. Sounds about right.

Juan Lagares had a good day, going 2-4 with a stolen base. Eric Campbell and Tejada both recorded base hits as well.

The Mets had a small rally in the top of the 9th inning, with Lucas Duda smacking a 1-out pinch-hit single. Curtis Granderson then also singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Ruben Tejada then struck out looking… LOOKING… Daniel Murphy then hit a screaming line drive to center field, unfortunately Michael Taylor was right there to catch it.

Notes:

In the last 9 days, the Mets RBI leader is Matt Harvey. Yeah, the pitcher Matt Harvey. His two-run home run last week and his 2-RBI single today make up his team-leading 4 RBIs in that span.

On Deck:

The Mets will send All-Star Jacob deGrom (9-6, 2.14 ERA) to face the Nationals tomorrow in Washington DC at 7:05 ET. The Nationals have yet to officially designate a starting pitcher.
