In a scathing rebuke of the dysfunction of Mets ownership, former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci ripped into the team’s spending on player development, the draft, and free agency. Scaramucci spoke with baseball insider Jon Heyman of FanCred in an exclusive interview.
“I’m super concerned. Not to get overly dramatic, but if you traded the whole team for the Yankees triple-A team, I would be less concerned. The Yankees stack up on players, they pay through the nose for the draft, they give out very high signing bonus. You’re going to lose about 45-50% of these kids. The remainder go to triple-A. One or two of them become world-class prospects. If you do the statistical analysis, that is the way to go to build your team.”
“These guys don’t do that. They nickel and dime these guys in the prospect area, nickel and dime during the draft, and then they go after players that are through their sell by date. That’s what we have been dealing with.”
Ironically, Scaramucci still maintains part ownership (4 percent) of the New York Mets, which makes his criticism all the more glaring and comes off as an indictment of the dysfunction by Fred and Jeff Wilpon – a dysfunction that has been broadly chronicled by me right here on MMO.
The disappointing turn in what was supposed to be a postseason contending team in 2018, has ignited the ire of the fan base and has given rise to several anti-ownership and protest groups that are gaining popularity all over social media.
The Mets, who have yet to name a new general manager, face a critical offseason fraught with many questions that have yet to be decided – chief among them whether the team will rebuild or shoot for contention in 2019 as interim GM John Ricco has asserted.
