Dilson, Herrera

Rookie second basemen Dilson Herrera is on his way to New York and will be activated before tonight’s game against the Giants, the team announced.

Herrera, 21, has been on the disabled list since May 15 with a fractured right middle finger.

During his rehab assignment, Herrera went 8-for-18 combined at St. Lucie and Triple-A Las Vegas with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored while striking out five times.

Herrera was hitting .235 with one home run and three RBIs in 10 games with the Mets before he was injured.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that Dilson Herrera is tentatively scheduled to begin his rehab assignment with High-A St. Lucie on Thursday.

On Tuesday, general manager Sandy Alderson said Herrera could return from the disabled list and rejoin the Mets within the next two weeks.

Herrera, 21, has been on the disabled list since May 15 with a fractured right middle finger.

It will be interesting to see how Herrera will fit into the infield alignment once he returns.

It was a topic of discussion during Tuesday night’s Mets broadcast, and Gary Cohen wondered if Collins could afford to change things if Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy and Wilmer Flores continue hitting like they currently are.

Terry Collins told reporters on Monday that second baseman  has begun throwing and swinging a bat.

Herrera, 21, suffered a fractured right middle finger while taking batting practice last month and hasn’t played since May 14.

According to Collins, there’s a chance Herrera could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

It’s not clear how playing time will be divided once Herrera returns. He was hitting .235 with one home run and three RBIs at the time of his injury.

Daniel Murphy has really stepped it up at the plate and since returning to second base after Herrera was injured, he is batting .414 with a .992 OPS over the last two weeks.
