The Mets attempted to trade for Alexis Díaz, the brother of Edwin Díaz, in July, according to Andy Martino of SNY.

In the article, Martino highlighted that the Reds’ asking price was too high and the organization questioned whether or not the reliever was actually available.

The article also highlights next season’s depleted bullpen and the possibility of luring Edwin back as two major reasons why the Mets should call the Reds in the offseason and inquire about Alexis.

The validity of Martino’s argument of luring Edwin back to the Mets is solid.  Alexis stated last season that the brothers FaceTimed every night, or after any appearance that either brother made, according to Anthony DiComo and Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

DiComo and Sheldon also reported that when the Mets were in Cincinnati, Edwin stayed with Alexis at his apartment.

The asking price for the younger Díaz brother would be high due to the five years of team control left on his contract. Not to mention, Alexis was dominant in his rookie season, recording a 1.84 ERA and 11.7 SO/9.

The idea of both Díaz brothers in the Mets bullpen in 2023 is tantalizing. The two of them finished with sub two ERAs and sub one WHIPs.

In order for that dream to come true, first the Mets need to re-sign Edwin. That, however, will be tall task as Edwin is rumored to receive the largest contract for a closer in MLB history.

The Mets are also rumored to be prioritizing Edwin and Brandon Nimmo in the offseason that will one of great importance for the franchise.
