Travis Taijeron earns a promotion ti Binghamton after a hot start.

Earlier today we posted on the promotions of Wilmer Flores and Cory Mazzoni from St. Lucie to Binghamton. You can read more about that here.

No surprise there as we expected Flores to advance very soon and in fact we speculated that Cory Mazzoni would get the start in one of the games in tonight’s doubleheader.

However, these moves, like most minor league moves, led to a small chain reaction of other moves at the lower levels, specifically at St. Lucie and Savannah.

And possibly a few more moves to come tonight or tomorrow at Brooklyn. Let me break it down.

Today’s Transcations

From High-A St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton:

  • 3B Wilmer Flores
  • 2B Wilfredo Tovar
  • C Francisco Pena
  • SP Cory Mazzoni.

From Single-A Savannah to High-A St. Lucie:

  • OF Travis Taijeron
  • SS TJ Rivera
  • SP Rafael Montero
  • RP Jeff Walters

Who Loses?

  • C Kai Gronauer – Batting a pitiful .195 on the season, Francisco Pena could certainly make him expendable. Juan Centeno isn’t doing so hot either, but compared to Gronauer he looks like Johnny Bench.
  • 2B Reese Havens – Wilmer Flores getting reps at 2B last week may have been  a lot more than just a coincidence. They sure as hell aren’t going to tamper with 21-year old Jefry Marte who is having a solid season at third base for Bingo. The other thing is that Flores gets some PT in left field where lets face it, Juan Lagares and Pedro Zapata haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire. But Wilfredo Tovar also getting promoted means bad news for Havens.
  • RP Erik Turgeon – He’s having an awful season and a demotion or even an outright cut could be in his future. Ryan Fraser, who has also struggled since being promoted to Bingo, could also find himself going back to St. Lucie.

Who Gains?

  • SS Phillip Evans – Evans could get the call to replace TJ Rivera at shortstop for Savannah. As Pete pointed out, he had a solid season for Brooklyn in 2011 and he seems up for the challenge. It would make sense to move him to Low-A now.
  • IF Juan Gamboa – He moved up through three levels of the Mets system in 2011 and finished off as a member of Savannah’s post-season roster. He may find his way back to Savannah by this time tomorrow.
  • SP Luis Mateo – Shot in the dark here, but he had a solid season in the DSL in 2011 and what a debut so far with ‘Clones striking out nine batters in 5.2 innings while picking up his first win of the season. Remember, when we signed him, he was considered to be one of the best Dominican pitchers available at the time.
