Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Mets are considering a scenario in which they would trade Noah Syndergaard to the San Diego Padres and would then use some of the return from that trade to acquire Marcus Stroman.

Rosenthal cautions that it is one of many scenarios the Mets are considering right now and that the Astros are also in the mix for Stroman due to the lofty asking price the Mets currently have for Syndergaard.

Stroman, 28, has also been one of the hottest names on the trade market this month as the Blue Jays have been taking offers for him. The right-hander made his first All-Star team this season and has a 6-11 record, 2.96 ERA, 3.52 FIP, and 1.227 WHIP this season. He also is averaging 7.1 K/9 as compared to 2.5 BB/9.

Notably, Stroman is a Long-Island native as he is from Suffolk County. He comes with less control than Syndergaard, though, as he will be a free agent after the 2020 season as compared to the latter who isn’t a free agent until after the 2021 season.

Syndergaard, 26, is 7-5 with a 4.33 ERA, 3.64 FIP, and 1.263 WHIP to go along with 9.0 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9.

Rosenthal says that it is unclear what the return for Syndergaard would be and how much of it would go to the Mets is, but notes that one name that could interest the Blue Jays is Cal Quantrill since he is a Canadian native.

Quantrill, 24, made his MLB debut this season and has a 3-2 record with a 3.76 ERA, 4.21 FIP, and 1.177 WHIP in 13 games (eight starts, 52 2/3 innings). He’s registered 7.7 K/9 as compared to 2.4 BB/9.

The Padres certainly have the farm system to make an enticing package, with seven top 100 on MLB Pipeline highlighting it.
