The Mets announced via Twitter that they’ve placed starting pitcher Zack Wheeler on the disabled list with a “stress reaction” in his right arm. In a corresponding move they have recalled RHP Tyler Pill from the minor leagues and are also calling up Chris Flexen to start in Wheeler’s place Thursday.
Wheeler, 27, has pitched poorly this season. In 17 starts he has gone 3-7 with a 5.21 ERA, 5.03 FIP and 1.587 WHIP. In 86.1 innings he has struck out 81 and walked 40.
Flexen, 23, has been tearing it up with Double-A Binghamton this season. In seven start he is 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA, striking out 50 in 48.2 innings. He has good velocity on his fastball, up to 96 mph, and a good curveball. The last time the Mets called someone up straight from Double-A Binghamton was in 2015 when Michael Conforto got the call.
Pill, 27, has made five appearances and three starts in the Major Leagues. In 18.0 innings he has struck out 14 and walked seven, pitching to a 5.00 ERA, 4.54 FIP, and 1.500 WHIP. He will pitch out of the bullpen for the Mets.
There is no current timetable for how long Wheeler will be out or whether or not this is related to his Tommy John surgery. It also remains to be seen if Flexen’s promotion is temporary or permanent.
