The Mets got clobbered by the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 tonight in what I would call was the ugliest loss of the season by far. They have now gone 5-16 in their last 21 games and are in their worst strecth since their 5-13 start to begin the season. They are in a deep funk and continue to slide deeper and deeper into baseball oblivion.
Dillon Gee was torched for eight runs and six walks in 3.2 innings pitched; the worst start of his career. The bullpen only made matters worse, and the offense was completely impotent against Phillies ace Cliff Lee.
Number three hitter David Wright showed his frustration and got into a heated exchange with plate umpire Mike DiMuro after being called out on strikes in the sixth. “We’re in a rut,” David Wright said. “We’re playing pretty bad baseball right now.”
Wright is now batting .158 (6 for 38) in his last ten games, and .189 (14 for 73) in August. Talk of his ascent back to super-stardom ten days after his return from the disabled list, may have been premature. In fact, this is David Wright at his absolute worst this season, even when he played with an injured back.
The starting pitching is in complete chaos of late, and only R.A. Dickey who sports a 5-11 record, has an ERA under 4.00 checking in at 3.89. These dreaful results come despite pitching half of their games in the expansive ultimate pitchers park, Citi Field.
Things are getting pretty ugly, pretty fast around here.
