Buck Showalter’s coaching staff for his first season with the Mets is very quickly starting to come together.

We’ve learned the past two days that the Mets are reportedly bringing in both Wayne Kirby and Joey Cora to be their first and third base coach, respectively. They join Jeremy Hefner, who was brought back from Luis Rojas’ staff as the pitching coach.

According to Deesha Thosar of the NY Daily News, the Mets may not be done just yet this week. The team is reportedly expected to finalize the rest of their coaching staff by this weekend.

Next up on their list appears to be the bench coach opening.

As Thosar mentions, the Mets are currently busy trying to nail down what someone with knowledge of the process says is “expected to be an exciting, headline-grabbing hire.” The front office is said to be working on a tricky negotiation with the mystery person.

While the identity of said mystery candidate is still unknown, Thosar can confirm that former Mets center fielder and short-term manager Carlos Beltran will not be hired for that role.

I’m sure we’ll find out this individual’s identity soon enough. For now, Mets fans, who do you think the “headline-grabbing hire” will be?
