The Mets (68-56) obliterated the Phillies (50-75) Monday night by a score of 16-7. Welcome back David!

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom endured the shortest start of his career tonight, lasting only 2 2/3 innings. He allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 3. He also allowed 3 home runs, as the Phillies just weren’t being fooled by him.

He didn’t have his best stuff, which happens, however this may have dire consequences for his Cy Young hopes. His ERA jumped from 1.98 to 2.29, which ties him with Clayton Kershaw for 2nd best in the National League. Zack Greinke‘s ERA sits at a stellar 1.67 for tops in the league.

Sean Gilmartin was the long man today, and was stellar. He pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 4. He has been extremely valuable this year to the Mets when a starter falters and they need a few innings from a reliever. He earned the win this evening.

Hansel Robles came in and pitched a perfect 7th inning, the first Mets 1-2-3 inning of the day. Eric O’Flaherty pitched a clean 8th inning, striking out one.

Carlos Torres finished the job this evening, pitching a clean 9th. he allowed a leadoff walk, however induced a double play to keep the Phillies at bay.

David Wright:

He’s back! In his first at bat of the day, he crushed a 2-0 fastball into the upper deck in left field for a home run. As Ron Darling said in the booth and I agree, it was about as far as I’ve ever seen Wright hit a home run. He ended up going 2-5 with a walk and 3 runs scored, striking out twice.

Wright had a rough game defensively, misplaying two very hard-hit balls over at third base. This is to be expected has he hasn’t seen balls hit this hard in a long time. He’ll be fine, folks.

Offense:

The Mets left Coors Field just so they could hit more.

Records set this evening:

  • New Mets record for home runs in a game: 8 (Wright, Lagares, Flores 2, d’Arnaud, Cuddyer, Murphy, Cespedes)
  • New Mets record for extra-base hits in a game: 15 (Beat 13 set in Arizona exactly 10 years ago today)

The Mets absolutely mashed tonight, crushing 8 home runs and 7 doubles. Juan Lagares (2 RBI), Daniel Murphy(2 RBI), Yoenis Cespedes (2 RBI), David Wright (1 RBI), Wilmer Flores (5 RBI), Travis d’Arnaud (3 RBI), and Michael Cuddyer (1 RBI) all notched multi-hit performances.

Sean Gilmartin and Michael Conforto also recorded base hits. Ruben Tejada was the only starter to not record a base hit, however in his last at bat he hit a screaming line drive that hit the pitcher in his upper thigh to rob him of his hit.

On deck:

Tomorrow, the Mets will send Noah Syndergaard (7-6, 3.17 ERA) to the hill against Phillies’ starter Jerome Williams (4-9, 6.10 ERA). Game time is 7.05 ET at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia.
