Speaking with reporters at Citizens Bank Park, GM Sandy Alderson confirmed that right-hander Rafael Montero is unlikely to pitch for the Mets again this season.

Montero, 24, who has been out since April with a rotator cuff injury, was making his fifth rehab start when he complained of stiffness after the game to trainers.

I have a hunch that ultimately, Montero will have a career trajectory much like we’ve seen with Jeurys Familia. He has two quality pitches and could eventually become a solid reliever.

Rafael Montero had a setback in his latest rehab start and is back to square one. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, he may be finished for the year.

Montero pitched three innings for Advanced-A St. Lucie on Sunday, and gave up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in a 46 pitch effort.

Montero, 24, who has been out since April with a rotator cuff injury, was making his fifth rehab start.

Not exactly sure what the nature of the setback is I would imagine it’s connected to the same rotator cuff issue.
