New-York-Mets-Terry-Collins

With the big news that the Mets and Sandy Alderson have agreed on a 3-year extension, reports are also circulating that the Mets will soon announce that Terry Collins is returning as the team’s manager in 2015.

Additionally, Mike Puma of the New York Post was told that the Mets are considering Tim Teufel as a possibility to replace Lamar Johnson as the team’s hitting coach. Teufel, 56, has spent the last three seasons as the Mets’ third-base coach.

Puma says that Teufel has earned the respect of the front office because he embraced the Mets’ hitting philosophy from the very beginning.

Among the rest of the staff, pitching coach Dan Warthen and bench coach Bob Geren are expected to be retained, but it’s less clear if first-base coach Tom Goodwin and bullpen coach Ricky Bones are safe.

Wally Backman is also being considered for the coaching staff but it’s not clear if that will happen.

“Alderson, according to a source, was recently put off by a comment Backman made in which the Las Vegas manager indicated he knew all along that pitcher Jacob deGrom — who has emerged as an NL Rookie of the Year candidate — had the potential to become something special. The source indicated Alderson believed the comment implied that nobody else in the organization knew of deGrom’s potential.”

Collins is believed to be an advocate of adding Backman to the major league staff. but the final call belongs to Alderson.

I don’t see it…

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, the Mets are expected to retain Manager Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson, and will make an official announcement at the end of the season.

“We still have some things to accomplish,” Alderson said. “And I would like to be here when we do”.

Regarding Collins, the Mets GM told the Daily News that “What we will do is we will make an announcement toward the end of the season, if not at the end of the season.”

“His status still hasn’t been announced…I think he’s done a good job. Throughout the season, we’ve had some issues that we’ve had to deal with. He has handled them very well. We have seen the growth of our young players, especially in the pitching area. And we have played well the last — really, if we go back to even before the All-Star break. So he has done an excellent job.”

Collins is under contract for 2015 and has a team option for 2016.
