According to columnist Neil Best of Newsday, Jeff Wilpon told reporters at a charity event in Harlem that the Mets might not be able to wait until the trade deadline to make some moves. Asked what he thought the Mets needed, “Hits,” the Mets COO responded.

Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Mets are debating internally whether signing Jose Reyes would be worth the public-relations fallout, according to major-league sources.

Rosenthal sees it as a waste of time, wondering if Reyes can even be considered a significant on-field contributor plus all the baggage he brings ranging from violating baseball’s domestic-violence policy, being 33 years old, and already in obvious decline.

“The move would be low-risk financially; the Mets would owe Reyes only the pro-rated portion of the minimum salary, with the Rockies obligated for the rest. But the Mets also could find a better player with lesser baggage.”

Finally, general Manager Sandy Alderson told reporters that it’s too early to make a deal and it’s not for a lack of trying.

“I think it’s going to depend quite a bit on what the situation is late in July, what our injury situation is with respect to all of the players we currently have on the disabled list, and those that may go on between now and then,” Alderson said.

But until he can bring some help to the team as he did last Summer, he’s disappointed in how the team has performed offensively and he wishes that they would stop acting like a one trick pony.

“We’ve proven you can’t just rely on home runs to get offense over the course of a season,” said Alderson. “I don’t think we want them to get away from their strength all the time, but under the right circumstances, being able to make adjustments is important.”
