Buffalo 3, Columbus 1

By Andrew O’Brien

Back-to-back walks with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning led to two runs and another Buffalo Bisons win Tuesday night.

With the game tied 1-1 in the eighth, Fred Lewis drew a one-out walk. Valentino Pascucci followed with another walk. Matt Tuiasosopo singled to left field, plating Lewis with the go-ahead run. Pascucci advanced to throw on a fielding error by Columbus’ shortstop and then Jordany Valdespin — who came on as a pinch hitter — plated Pascucci on a forceout. The Bisons went ahead 3-1 and never looked back.

Matt Harvey took a no-decision after pitching six innings of three-hit baseball. Harvey allowed one run but walked four and struck out five. His Triple-A ERA stands at 3.94. Over six innings, Harvey threw 98 pitches (60 strikes).

Buffalo took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Corey Wimberly scored on a Josh Satin single.

Columbus evened the score when Jason Donald doubled home Ezequiel Carrera.

Pedro Beato pitched one inning of relief as he continued his rehab assignment. He allowed one hit and struck out two. He did commit a balk. Fernando Cabrera picked up his 11th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Tuiasosopo went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

St. Lucie 9, Palm Beach 1

By Sean Kenny

Cory Mazzoni pitched seven innings of one-run ball today, but it wouldn’t matter as the St. Lucie offense exploded for nine runs in their series-opening victory against the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Mazzoni came in today and was determined to break his streak of less than six innings pitched in his last three starts, and did so in dominating fashion. Cory went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits walking one and striking out six. The only knock against Mazzoni in the eyes of some is that for a guy with good power stuff and refinement, why isn’t he striking out more batters. Today proves he can coax weak contact while mixing in good control and strikeout stuff.

The bullpen’s entry today was uneventful, as Kyle Allen pitched a clean inning and Ryan Fraser allowed two hits and struck out one in his inning of work. Allen has quietly been having a pretty solid year in St. Lucie, and has seemed capable of harnessing his stuff for strikeouts while avoiding walks.

The offense for the Jr. Mets was fierce today, as every starter managed at least one hit and six of the nine had a run scored. They scored in 5 of the nine innings, and spotted Mazzoni a 2 to 0 lead before he even threw a pitch. Darrel Ceciliani, in his third game back from an injury had a big game, going 3 for 5 with two doubles, two runs scored an an RBI. Cory Vaughn went 3 for 5 with three RBI.

Lucie Logistics: The St. Lucie Mets went 6-for-15 with RISP in the game. Wilmer Flores, the prospect the world has been waiting for has done nothing but prove why the organization and fans are clamoring for him in Flushing sooner than later. Flores went 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and a walk. That makes nine home runs on the season for Wilmer, and he is hitting .317.Wilfredo Tovar stole his tenth base of the season, and the shortstop is batting .289. Tomorrow the St. Lucie Mets will look to continue their winning ways, sending Chase Huchingson (5-3, 3.18) to the mound up against the Cardinals Kevin Siegrist (2-0, 3.54)

Savannah 12, Greenville 2

By Sean Kenny

After a scoreless first four innings, the Gnats erupted for twelve runs in the last five frames, taking a huge win against the Greenville Drive to split the series behind a solid effort from Domingo Tapia

Tapia was great throughout his start, and only hit a bump in the fourth inning when he walked two and gave up two hits, including the only run allowed. Tapia’s final line would read four innings with one run allowed on seven hits, walking three and striking out one. Domingo didn’t have his best stuff today, but he still minimized the damage behind another great defensive, error-free game. Marcos Camarena pitched two innings for the win, allowing a run on three hits, striking out one. Jeffrey Walters came out for two innings as well, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out two and Chasen Bradford came out for the ninth, allowing one hit. Great pitching day by the bullpen to pick up Tapia who did some heavy lifting in the fourth that shortened his outing.

The Savannah offense explosion was led by T.J. Rivera, he of yet another five game hitting streak, going 4 for 6 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Charles Thurber, who seems to have found his groove went 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBI. The offense was a power-house today, with three total home runs and every starter getting on base, and eight of nine having hits. With offensive explosions like this, the pitchers can rest easy.

Gnats Gnotes: Travis Taijeron continued his scorching-hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored raising his average to .297. If he isn’t begging to go to St. Lucie with these performances, then I don’t know what he is doing. Dustin Lawley also had a great game, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. Cam Maron also went 2 for 5, with two runs scored and a walk. If Maron can keep up this performance with Cordero struggling, at-bats may be coming his way. Cole Frenzel is struggling at the plate, hitting .118. The Gnats will look to win the series tomorrow, sending Tyler Pill (3-3, 1.93) to the mound against the Drive and Miguel Pena (4-2, 2.09)

Lets play some baseball!
