michael Conforto

The New York Mets have announced that outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been placed on the disabled list with a pinched nerve.

Michael Conforto, who the Mets kept from leaving for Las Vegas just in case, will be officially reactivated and remain with the team.

August 1

No surprise here, but the New York Mets announced that they have optioned outfielder Michael Conforto to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes on the 25-man roster.

I was hoping that Eric Campbell would be the one to go and that the Mets would keep Conforto around for another week until Michael Cuddyer was activated from the DL next week, but oh well.

The good news for Conforto is that it’s still a promotion for him as the Mets could’ve opted to send him back to Double-A Binghamton instead of Las Vegas.

Conforto, 22, batted .211 ( 4 for 19) in six games with the Mets, recording two doubles and three RBIs. He was hitless in his last 11 at-bats.

The kid did show a quick bat and a nice approach at the plate during his first couple of games, but once pitchers adjusted and had the book on him  you could tell he was overmatched and needed some more time in the minors to develop.

Although I did feel that his promotion was a little premature, and that he needed more than 44 games above Single-A, we will definitely see this exciting and very talented prospect again at some point in 2016. He’s going to be great when he’s ready.
