Mets center fielder Juan Lagares is beginning his rehab assignment with the Double-A Rumble Ponies as he works his way back from thumb surgery. He will arrive in Binghamton Tuesday.

Lagares, 28, has been out since June with a thumb injury and his defense has been sorely missed. In just 216.1 innings in center field, he had seven defensive runs saved to go with a 4.9 UZR.

At the plate in 2017, Lagares had been hitting .269/.317/.409 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 102 plate appearances with a 92 wRC+.
