The Mets lost in stunning fashion on Sunday when Jenrry Mejia allowed two ninth inning runs to give the Phillies a shocking 6-5 victory. For Mejia, It was his third blown save of the season.
Afterward Terry Collins told reporters that Mejia was perfectly fine and that health issues had nothing to do with what transpired.
However, Mejia told a completely different story and revealed that not only was the sore calf still an issue, but that he had seen team doctors on Saturday for a sports hernia that will require surgery and a sore back.
The Mets closer has been dealing with the hernia for three weeks, He will continue to pitch through, take pain medication, and then have surgery in the offseason. Doctors warned him to speak up if he feels too much pain.
“The doctor said if it bothers me too much, let him know and they’re going to fix it. I will keep pitching and have the full season and then have the operation.”
“At the beginning of the season, everything was good,” Mejia said. “Now, I got my leg, thigh, my back, a little bit of a hernia.”
First of all, why are they even messing around with this, why not shut him down and get the surgery over with?
Secondly, I just don’t understand how Collins doesn’t mention this to reporters when he was first asked. And worse yet, when he’s confronted with what Mejia reported, he made a joke about it saying maybe we’ll get Mike Puma to close. Are you kidding me?
This explains why Mejia has looked like a shell of himself in his last dour appearances.
