jeff waltersAs the Mets players start to trickle down to spring training, some way ahead of schedule, Adam Rubin of ESPN NY writes that right-hander Jeff Walters could be a candidate to break camp with the Mets in the bullpen as suggested by GM Sandy Alderson.

Walters saved 38 games last season for Binghamton (AA), which was more than any player had done before him.

When asked about whether he feels he has a real shot of breaking camp with the Mets, Walters shares with Rubin, “I hope so.”

He continues, “I feel that’s why I’m here. I feel like I’m going to go out and do my best, and as long as I get some eyes on me, that’s all I can hope for. I can’t control any of that stuff. You can just go out and throw strikes, pound the zone, get outs and show them that I can get consistent outs.”

In 2013, Walters, 26, was 4-3, with a 2.09 ERA, and 60 strikeouts in 56 innings to go along with his record setting 38 saves.

He now enters his 5th season in the Mets organization with the hopes that he is closer to a major league debut and maybe it could happen in 2014.

The Mets have some exciting players competing in camp this year and it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds once camp breaks for the season.
