The New York Mets came into the 2023 season as one of the favorites to win the World Series, and that was reflected in the betting odds. According to BetMGM, Francisco Lindor and the Mets opened at +1100 to be crowned champions, the sixth shortest odds. The Los Angeles Dodgers were valued at +500, followed by the Houston Astros at +700, the Atlanta Braves at +800, the New York Yankees at +900 and the Toronto Blue Jays at +900.

With a current record of 38-46, the odds has drastically shifted for the Mets as the month of July gets underway. Let’s take a look at what odds say for the Mets to win the World Series, the National League and the National League East.

On BetMGM, the Mets are currently +10000 to win the World Series, tied for the 20th-best odds along with the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs and the St. Lous Cardinals. One dollar would net you $100. The team is set at +4000 to win the National League, which ranks 10th in the NL along with the Cubs and the Cardinals. With the Mets 18.5 games out of first place in the NL East, they are set at +15000 to win the division.

Just a few years ago, a team that was 12 games under .500 on May 23 wound up winning the World Series. The 2019 Washington Nationals set the blueprint for talented teams who failed to play well in the first half of the season. If you are believer that this Mets team could do something similar with a few additions to the bullpen, placing a unit or two on them to win the World Series may be worth it come October. If not, it is difficult to find much value on any future bets for Buck Showalter‘s team.

Is There Any Value?

If you don’t feel confident in wagering on the Mets as a whole, Pete Alonso could be the way to go. The now three-time All-Star is +700 on BetMGM to be the home run leader in all of baseball. He currently trails Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani by six home runs and Braves slugger Matt Olson by three. Alonso looked a bit out of sorts in his return from the injured list, but a home run in Sunday’s win over the San Francisco Giants could reignite his power.
