Jon Heyman of FanRag went on WFAN tonight and said something interesting regarding the Mets efforts to land a catcher.
While he notes that the team hasn’t been aggressive in their pursuit of a catcher, he does mention that the Mets have discussed a deal with the Cleveland Indians regarding their catchers, Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez.
Perez, 29, likely would be the easiest to pry of the two as he has been a career backup to date with a .125/.255/.200 slash line for his career and has 0.8 framed runs this season, which is 22nd in the league.
Meanwhile, Gomes is also nothing spectacular on the offensive end, but he is solid with a .253/.337/.456 slash line this season with four home runs and eight RBI.
The 30-year old is elite on the defensive side, though, as he currently ranks sixth in the league with a 35.67 caught stealing percentage and is second in framing with 3.6 framed runs.
However, Heyman pours some cold water on the idea in his article that he wrote regarding it, as a source from the Cleveland Indians had this to say regarding the Mets interest in their catchers.
“We’re not a farm team for the Mets.”
So, from that point of view, it sounds as if the Mets are not offering much to make a deal happen at the moment. While that might be the case now, things can certainly change as the season wears on.
For now, the Mets will likely try to wait and see what Kevin Plawecki can do once he returns in a couple of weeks from a broken left hand.
Plawecki has hit .150/.393/.200 with no homers and one RBI in 20 at-bats this season.
Last year, he put himself back on the map in the organization as he hit .260/.364/.400 with three homers and 13 RBI in a brief sample size in the majors which were a result of an adjustment in his swing and approach.
However, one of Tomas Nido and Jose Lobaton will have to stay on the team as a backup once that happens with Travis d’Arnaud out the remainder of the season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery in April.
Nido and Lobaton have not been effective on either side of the ball as runners have run all over the team while not delivering on the offensive end with averages of .152 and .139 respectively.
