The Mets have routinely had teams with low floors and high ceilings. Just look at their rosters (specifically on offense) from past opening days.

Between Adrian Gonzalez, Jose Reyes, and Phillip Evans to name a few that come to mind. Instead, this year they finally have depth and good hitters. Adding Wilson Ramos, Jed Lowrie (even if he’ll miss a few weeks), Robinson Cano to go along with a full season of Jeff McNeil and a healthy Michael Conforto is such a ridiculous upgrade from Reyes, Jose Bautista, Devin Mesoraco, Austin Jackson, and Adrian Gonzalez.

Fangraphs do their annual power rankings and this year, the Mets really stood out thanks to their new additions. They rank 10th at catcher, 13th at first, 3rd at second base, 15th at shortstop, 21st at third base, third in left field, 19th in center, and 10th in right field.

The third at second is largely due to the addition of Robinson Cano but they also project Jed Lowrie to get at bats there. Lowrie and McNeil don’t look great at third but McNeil is still unproven according to projections and Lowrie is a late bloomer so he does not have a lot of love yet.

Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo are projected to be above average offensive producers so albeit, Fangraphs has Conforto in left and Nimmo in right. Right field is a more populated position so Conforto might have trouble going higher than Nimmo.

The positions that have the best shots at improving are third and shortstop. Third is contingent on McNeil continuing to be great from last season and this past Spring. Lowrie also coming back and allowing McNeil to play left field would also improve the teams production in center field. Shortstop could also see a lot of improvements is Amed Rosario continues to show progress from last season. His Spring was pretty fun to watch and it showed what his toolbox can bring.

Their pitching staff was ranked very high unsurprisingly. The starting staff was sixth thanks in large part to the trio of Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Zack Wheeler.

The only team in the NL East to have a better starting staff was the Nationals. The x-factor is Steven Matz. If Matz can be like the Matz the Mets got in September, then the Mets should end up with the better rotation. Corey Oswalt and Chris Flexen both looked in the Spring but the Nationals have some solid depth too with Joe Ross and Erick Fedde.

The re-made bullpen ranks fifth behind the likes of Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familila, Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman, and Justin Wilson. The Phillies bullpen ranked ahead of them at fourth likely due to the depth in their pen. Their pen can go seven deep whereas the Mets are little shaky beyond their top guys.

All told, the Mets are projected to have a team WAR of 42, which would be good for the eighth highest in baseball. I have been skeptical but I expect this team to improve by a lot. Taking plate appearances away from non-major leaguers and giving them to above average hitters should provide good results.
