Yesterday is a game the Mets would like to forget. It was the first time deGrom was human in years where he allowed three homers, six runs in four innings ending his streak of quality starts and three runs or less per start. The bullpen wasn’t great behind him and without knockout stuff (and defensive miscues) Robert Gsellman and Jason Vargas allowed seven runs in the last two innings of the game (which will probably increase the requests for Dallas Keuchel from Mets fans).
It wasn’t all bad though. The Mets still showed fight late in the game and the final score a lot closer than it should have been for a second straight game. Pete Alonso had his first multi-homer game and now has five on the season. Both Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo had a double and a homer. Quick note on Alonso – this game brought his batting average up to .385 and OPS to a 1.352.

Noah Syndergaard will try to put the Mets back on track today. In two starts this year he is 0-1 allowing six runs and eight hits over 12 innings while striking out 13. After a rocky season debut, he rebounded in a positive way limiting the Nationals to two runs over six innings from one hit (a homer) at the Opening Day at home. Syndergaard has never faced the Twins before and since the Twins have so many homegrown players, there are only two players he has seen while they were with other teams:
- Jonathan Schoop 1-for-3, HR, K
- Michael Pineda 0-for-2, K (who is definitely not taking ABs tonight)
The Mets will get to see Jake Odorizzi tonight who is in his second season with the Twins. Jake has been pitching for a while, making his debut in 2012 with the Royals and becoming a regular starter with the Rays in 2014. So far this year he has allowed six runs, five earned over 6.2 innings and two starts. Last year he had a 4.49 ERA over 164.1 innings through 32 starts posting a 4.20 FIP, 1.345 WHIP, and 97 ERA+. He has made one start against the Mets way back in 2015 where he allowed one run over 6.2 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Robinson Cano 5-for-15, 2B, BB, 2 K
- Michael Conforto 0-for-3 K
- Travis d’Arnaud 0-for-2, BB, K
- Wilson Ramos 2-for-3, 2B
- Keon Broxton 0-for-1
- J.D. Davis 1-for-1, BB
Game Notes
Pete Alonso set a Mets record with 14 RBI in his first 10 games. He is one of eight players in major league history with 14 or more RBI in his first 10 games
Alonso is the first Mets rookie with a three-game homer streak since Benny Agbayani (two three-game streaks in 1999)…Courtesy of Elias…He is the second Mets player with a multi-homer game within his first 10 games (Mike Jacobs had two home runs in his fourth career game).
Noah Syndergaard has held his opponent to four runs or fewer in all 29 of his starts since returning from a lat injury in late 2017. That is the longest active streak in the NL and the third-longest in the majors overall. Gerrit Cole (36-straight starts beginning on September 29, 2017) and Ryne Stanek (31-straight since May 26 of last season) are the only pitchers with longer active streaks. Stanek has thrown a total of 43.0 innings in those 31 starts.
The Mets have hit 11 homers through their first four home games, the most in the team history. The previous mark
was seven home runs through their first four home contests done in 2006, 1995 and 1987. The Mets hit their 11th home run in their 15th home game last year.
Tomorrow, the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center will present the Carmen Berra Award posthumously to Shannon Forde, former Mets senior director of media relations, who, like Carmen, earned the love and respect of friends and colleagues as a steady, positive force for her family, her team and her city. Al Leiter will present the award to Shannon’s family. The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center is a nonprofit sports education organization on the campus of Montclair State University.
